In September 2022 I shared a post called “The cycle starts again” about my daughter Sophie, now 8, asking if she could come to watch Utd with me.
She’d been before but only between the ages of 3 and 5 when it didn’t really matter where we were, she just liked being out with her Dad.
In September 2022, just after turning 7, she came to me and asked if she could come. It was a great feeling to have her decide she wanted to go rather than me just bringing her along.
That article is linked below.
My earliest memory of football is the FA Cup final replay in 1990 when Utd men beat Crystal Palace 1-0. I didn’t go to the 3-3 draw 5 days earlier but my Dad took me to the replay.
With my Dad, I’ve seen it all as we’ve won the lot. Now with my daughter I might just get to see it all again.
In person, with my Dad, I saw Utd men win major trophies on the domestic and European stages. On TV I saw them win World titles.
But it all started with an FA Cup.
Introducing your children to football is a rite of passage for any parent and if they grow to love it and share it with you, it can bring incredible joy and shared memories.
I have so many from almost 50 years of going to watch United and 25 years of taking my four kids. The rebirth of the women's team has rekindled the love for going to watch games live for both my daughters. Watching us lift the FA Cup alongside my 25 year old daughter is going to go down as one my best days at a match. Hopefully you have years ahead of you of shared memories too.
